Highland Castle

Galbraith were appointed to act as contract administrator and principal designer for the replacement of a large lead flat roof on a remote castle in the highlands. The original leadwork had approached the end of its life after 147 years of service. This was identified from a date mark on the timber deck. Galbraith ensured that the roof was replaced on a like for like basis, to maintain its original appearance. Much of the original deck, constructed from estate sourced timber, was in good condition and retained. In addition to the replacement roof covering, new flashings were added to abutments and the roof light was removed, repaired and re-leaded, re-using the original glazing. Poorly applied defective cement render was also removed from one of the chimney stacks, revealing original stonework. The stonework was then pointed in a lime-based mortar to match other surrounding chimney stacks. Galbraith also ensured that ecology surveys were undertaken to establish the presence of bat roosts, to allow the correct licensing and handling procedures to be implemented during the works. The project was completed on time and within budget.
