River Annan Restoration Project

Available for partnership/ sponsorship | As sponsor of the River Annan Restoration project, you will unlock catchment-scale restoration of one of Scotland’s major rivers to its natural state. The sponsor will see rapid delivery on the ground of pilot restoration projects, and can facilitate roll-out across 800 miles of waterway in coming years.

The River Annan Restoration sponsor will deliver:

  • volumetric water benefit through Scotland’s first Replenish project.
  • 60 biodiversity units on the pilot sites with potential for many more.
  • 5 hectares of land managed for nature: enough to meet 69 people’s share of the Global Biodiversity Agreement target to protect 30% of earth for nature by 2030.*
  • a pipeline of nature restoration across a major river catchment.
  • protection for historic towns of Moffat and Annan from flooding.
  • climate resilience and biodiversity protection amongst food producers.
  • a revived River Annan Trust, giving a secure future to locally-led conservation action.

River Annan Restoration project development has been funded by the NatureScot/ Heritage Lottery Facilitating Investment Ready Nature Scotland (FIRNS) grant scheme. This has enabled a partnership of Galloway Fisheries Trust, Southern Upland Partnership and Galbraith to engage local landowners and bring two pilot projects to the point of implementation.

* Based on 30% of global land area, divided by global population = 0.47 hectares per person
